1. Introduction to how the Jew Where website works
Jew Where is a digital platform dedicated to identifying, organizing and sharing places connected to Jewish history, memory, culture and heritage. The website works mainly as an editorial and informational map, where the project team publishes and organizes content about places, routes and historical references.
The main content of the website is produced, selected and managed by the Jew Where team itself. Users do not have direct freedom to create pins, publish places, change historical texts or add editorial content to the map. The creation and management of the places presented remain under the responsibility of the administrator team. However, users may suggest changes, corrections and submit their own researched places through the Contact form by selecting the appropriate subject. If they intend to send photographs, documents or other files, they must indicate this in the form, confirm that they are aged 18 or over and accept the Contribution Terms. After submitting the form, they receive an automatic reply and must reply to that email to send the materials. The website does not provide file uploads for this process.
The website allows users to create an account to use personal features associated with places already available on the platform. These features include marking places as favorites, indicating places visited or places they wish to visit, assigning ratings, creating personal visit records, saving routes and setting up a public profile.
The user’s public profile is optional and is not publicly accessible until the user makes the initial privacy choice. Once activated, a public profile may be viewed by any internet visitor, including people who do not have a Jew Where account.
If the user continues directly with a public profile, all available visibility options are enabled by default, including the approved profile photo, favorites, places the user wishes to visit, visited places, diary, approved comments, comment likes, ratings, public routes and network information. The user may instead review these options before publication and may later hide individual sections or make the entire profile private through the privacy settings.
The website also allows comments on place pages, but these comments are not published automatically. Every comment submitted by a user is subject to moderation by the Jew Where team and may only appear publicly after approval. The team may reject, remove or keep pending any comment it considers inappropriate, offensive, abusive, incorrect or contrary to the website rules.
Jew Where also includes map and navigation features. The user may view places, explore categories, consult routes suggested by the team and use route tools. Some features may use the user’s browser location to calculate routes or improve the navigation experience, always within the technical permissions of the browser itself.
The website uses external services for technical and visual operation, including map tiles, satellite imagery, address search, route calculation, fallback images, robot protection and, where applicable, external directions and donation services.
These services may involve technical communication with third parties, such as loading scripts, map tiles or images, searching an address, calculating a route, performing security verification or processing an external donation.
In general terms, Jew Where should be understood as an editorial Jewish heritage platform with personal user features. It is not an open social network or a free publishing platform.
User participation is limited, controlled and connected to the use of content already available on the website.

Jew Where collects and uses personal data only to the extent necessary to allow the website to function, to create an account, to use personal features and to protect the platform against abuse, spam and automated access.
2.1. Account creation data
When a user creates an account, the website may collect:
- name or display name
- username
- email address
- password
- profile photo, if the user uploads an image
- email confirmation
- technical information made available by the browser or server, such as IP address, date and time, browser and device information, when recorded
The password is managed by the WordPress authentication system. The password must not be displayed or stored in plain text.
2.2. User profile data
The user may set up a profile within Jew Where. This profile may include:
- public name
- public username
- short bio
- profile photo
- visibility preferences
The public profile is optional. The user may control whether the profile appears publicly and which information associated with their activity is visible.
2.3. Privacy and visibility data
The website stores the user’s choices about what may or may not appear publicly on their profile, including:
- public profile enabled or disabled
- display of approved profile photo
- display of favorites
- display of places the user wishes to visit
- display of visited places
- display of diary
- display of approved comments
- display of likes received on comments
- display of ratings
- display of public routes
- display of followers and following relationships
For a new account, the profile is not publicly accessible until the user makes the initial privacy choice. If the user continues directly with a public profile, all available visibility options are enabled by default. The user may instead review the options before publication and may later disable individual sections or make the entire profile private through the account privacy settings.
These settings allow the user to control the public exposure of their activity on the website.
2.4. Data relating to interaction with places
The website allows the user to interact with places already published by the Jew Where team. For this purpose, data may be stored, such as:
- places marked as favorites
- places marked as visited
- places marked as “want to visit”
- ratings assigned to places
- diary records associated with visits
- date of visit, when provided by the user
- indication of previous visit, where applicable
This data is used to personalize the user’s experience and, when authorized in the privacy settings, may appear on the public profile.
2.5. Comments
The user may submit comments on place pages.
The website may store:
- content of the comment
- author of the comment
- email associated with the account
- place commented on
- date and time of submission
- status of the comment, such as pending or approved
- technical data associated with the submission, such as IP address and browser, when recorded by WordPress
Comments are not published automatically. All comments are subject to approval by the Jew Where team.
2.6. Likes and follows
The website may store limited social interactions, such as:
- likes on comments
- likes on public routes
- follow and follower relationships between users
These features are intended for basic interaction between users, but they do not turn the website into a free publishing platform.
2.7. Routes saved by the user
The user may save routes associated with places existing on Jew Where.
The website may store:
- route title
- short route description, if filled in
- list of places included in the route
- reference image associated with the first place
- route visibility, public or private
- date of creation and update
- likes received, when the route is public
Routes are created from places already existing on the website. The user does not create new places on the map.
2.8. Location and navigation data
Some map features may use the browser location to help the user calculate routes or guide navigation.
This data may include:
- approximate location or coordinates provided by the browser
- starting point used for route calculation
- addresses or place names entered by the user as a starting point
- destination coordinates necessary to calculate a route
- temporary map navigation data
Location depends on authorization given by the user in the browser.
When the user calculates a route, the necessary origin and destination coordinates are communicated directly by the browser to the external route calculation service used by Jew Where. If the user enters an address or place name that does not already have coordinates, the entered search text may first be communicated to an external address search service.
2.9. Technical and security data
The website may process technical data necessary for operation and security, including:
- IP address
- browser type
- device
- date and time of access
- essential WordPress cookies
- session data
- login attempts
- registration attempts
- email confirmation tokens
- password recovery tokens
- anti-robot verification data
The website also uses Cloudflare Turnstile in areas such as login, registration and password recovery, when configured, to help block bots and automated abuse.
2.10. Local storage in the browser
The website may use storage technologies in the user’s own browser, such as:
- localStorage
- sessionStorage
- essential cookies
These technologies may be used to store routes, map state, opened pins, login session or preferences necessary for the experience to function. Routes stored through localStorage may remain available after the browser is closed and when the user returns to the website. They do not expire automatically and remain until the user changes or clears the route through the website, or clears the browser’s stored data for the website.
2.11. Contact form
The website has a contact page connected to Contact Form 7. The current form may collect:
- name
- optional telephone number
- selected subject
- message
- indication of whether the user intends to send materials by email
- confirmation of the Contribution Terms, when applicable
- version of the Contribution Terms presented at submission
- date and time of submission
Contact Form 7 does not currently store a complete copy of the submission in the WordPress database. The message is sent by email.
If the user indicates that they intend to send photographs, documents or other files, those materials are sent afterwards by replying to the automatic email. They are not uploaded through the website.
2.12. Donations and external payments
The website has an external link for donations through PayPal or another external payment provider.
When the user clicks to donate, the donation is processed outside the Jew Where website, in the environment of the external provider.
Jew Where does not directly collect, through its website, full bank card details, PayPal account details or other sensitive financial data.
Jew Where may receive or consult limited data associated with the transaction, when made available by the payment provider, as explained in the Donation Policy.
2.13. External services used by the website
Depending on the page and feature used, Jew Where communicates with the following external services:
- CARTO, through basemaps.cartocdn.com, for loading the main map tiles
- Esri ArcGIS World Imagery, through server.arcgisonline.com, for loading satellite map tiles and satellite layer previews
- OpenStreetMap, through tile.openstreetmap.org, as a fallback map tile service when the primary minimap tiles cannot be loaded
- Nominatim, through nominatim.openstreetmap.org, for searching addresses or place names entered by the user
- routing.openstreetmap.de for calculating walking and driving routes
- Unsplash, through images.unsplash.com, for loading a fallback image when a place does not have its own image
- Google Maps, when the user chooses to open external directions
- Cloudflare Turnstile, through challenges.cloudflare.com, for anti-robot protection
- PayPal, when the user chooses to open the external donation service
Map tile and image providers may receive the user’s IP address, browser, device, date and time of the request and information necessary to return the requested tile or image. Map tile requests may also reveal the map area and zoom level being viewed.
Nominatim may receive the address or place name entered by the user when a starting point needs to be converted into coordinates. The route calculation service may receive the origin and destination coordinates necessary to calculate the requested route, including the user’s browser location when it is selected as the starting point.
Google Maps and PayPal are opened only after the user chooses to access those external services and are then governed by their own terms, privacy policies and cookie rules.
2.14. Export, import and deletion of data
The account area allows the user to:
- export compatible data backups
- import compatible data backups
- request permanent account deletion
The export may include profile data, privacy preferences, favorites, visited places, wishlist, diary, ratings and references to comments.
Account deletion removes or anonymizes data associated with the user, according to the logic implemented on the website. Some content may be preserved in anonymized form when necessary to maintain the historical or functional integrity of the platform. For example, comments or ratings assigned by the user may remain on the place page, in anonymized form, even after account deletion.
2.15. Data that the user does not create directly
The user does not freely create Jew Where’s editorial content.
Under the current operation of the website, the user cannot:
- create new pins on the map
- publish new historical places
- change editorial texts
- edit historical information about places
- publish editorial images in pins
- modify the project’s documentary database
The main content of Jew Where remains under the control of the administrator team.

This Privacy Policy explains, clearly and transparently, how Jew Where collects, uses, stores, protects and shares personal data of users who visit the website, create an account or use its features.
This policy was prepared taking into account the transparency and information principles provided in Articles 12, 13 and 14 of the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR.

Jew Where has not appointed a Data Protection Officer at this stage. For any matter related to personal data, the user may contact the controller through the privacy email indicated in this policy.

This policy applies to the processing of personal data carried out through the Jew Where website, including:

This policy does not apply to external websites, platforms or services that may be accessed through links on Jew Where. Those services have their own privacy policies.
3.4. Personal data collected directly from the user
In most cases, Jew Where collects data directly from the user, when the user creates an account, fills in forms, submits comments, configures the profile or uses website features.
We may collect the following categories of data:

The user should not send sensitive personal data or third-party data if this is not necessary.
3.5. Personal data that may not be obtained directly from the user
In some cases, Jew Where may receive personal data that was not provided directly by the data subject.
This may happen, for example, when:
- a user mentions another person in a comment
- someone sends a message through the contact form containing third-party data
- a payment provider, such as PayPal, communicates minimum data associated with a donation
- technical providers communicate data necessary for operation, security or abuse prevention
- a historical correction, credit request or removal request contains information about third parties
- public, documentary or bibliographic sources contain names or references to identifiable persons
In these cases, the data may include:
- name
- identification associated with a communication
- information included in a message or request
- documentary reference

- minimum transaction data
- other data provided by the person contacting Jew Where
Where applicable and legally necessary, Jew Where will seek to process such data in a proportionate, transparent manner, limited to the purpose of the specific request or situation.
3.6. Data that Jew Where does not intend to collect
Jew Where does not ask the user to provide:

- ethnic origin
- political opinions
- health data
- biometric data
- data concerning sex life
- criminal data
- other sensitive data without necessity
However, because this is a platform dedicated to Jewish heritage, certain user interactions may reveal an interest in Jewish, cultural, historical or religious topics.
The user should avoid publishing or sending sensitive data about themselves or third parties in comments, bio, forms or any free text field on the website.

3.10. Public profile and visibility preferences
The public profile is optional and is not publicly accessible until the user makes the initial privacy choice.
Once activated, a public profile is publicly accessible on the internet and may be viewed by people who do not have a Jew Where account.
If the user continues directly with a public profile, all available profile visibility options are enabled by default. The user may instead review the privacy settings before publication.
Depending on the information available in the account and the visibility settings maintained by the user, the public profile may display:
- public name
- username
- bio
- approved profile photo
- favorites
- visited places
- places the user wishes to visit
- diary
- approved comments
- likes received on comments
- ratings
- public routes
- followers and following relationships
The user may change the visibility of individual sections or disable the entire public profile at any time through the privacy settings in the account area.
Profile photos remain subject to moderation and will not appear publicly before approval.
3.11. Comments and moderation
The user may submit comments on place pages.
Comments are not published automatically. Every comment is subject to moderation by the Jew Where team.
Jew Where may approve, reject, remove, hide or keep pending any comment that it considers inappropriate, offensive, abusive, illegal, spam, defamatory, discriminatory, contrary to the Terms of Use or incompatible with the purpose of the website.
When a comment is approved, it may appear publicly associated with the user’s profile or public name, according to the applicable settings.
3.12. Browser location
Some map features may request permission to use the user’s browser location.
Location may be used to:
- calculate routes
- define a starting point
- improve the map navigation experience
The use of location depends on permission granted by the user in the browser. The user may refuse or withdraw this permission in the browser or device settings.
Jew Where does not use browser location to create a permanent history of the user’s movements on its own servers. However, when the user selects their current location as the starting point and calculates a route, the necessary origin and destination coordinates are communicated directly by the browser to the external route calculation service at routing.openstreetmap.de.
If the user enters an address or place name instead of using the browser location, the entered text may be communicated to Nominatim at nominatim.openstreetmap.org so that the address or place can be converted into coordinates.
3.13. Cookies and similar technologies
The website may use cookies, localStorage, sessionStorage and similar technologies to:
- allow login
- maintain session
- protect forms
- store temporary map state
- store routes in the browser so that they may remain available when the user returns to the website
- improve the browsing experience
- protect the website against spam and abuse
- load necessary external services
The use of these technologies is explained in a separate document: Cookie Policy and Local Technologies.
3.14. Sharing data with third parties
Jew Where may use third parties to ensure the operation, security, maintenance, communication and improvement of the website and its services.
These third parties may include, depending on the active or configured features on the website:
- web hosting and technical infrastructure
- WordPress and plugins necessary for website operation
- email or SMTP services, including WP Mail SMTP and the respective email delivery provider
- Contact Form 7, for managing messages sent through the contact form
- Cloudflare Turnstile, for protection against robots and automated abuse
- Akismet, when active, for anti-spam protection in comments
- Google Site Kit, when configured, for connection with Google services such as Search Console, Analytics, Tag Manager, AdSense or equivalent services
- CARTO, through basemaps.cartocdn.com, for loading the main map tiles
- Esri ArcGIS World Imagery, through server.arcgisonline.com, for loading satellite map tiles and layer previews
- OpenStreetMap, through tile.openstreetmap.org, as a fallback map tile service

- cache, optimization and performance services, including LiteSpeed Cache, when active
- security plugins, firewall, login protection, login attempt limitation and technical logging
- PayPal, when the user decides to make a donation
- other technical tools necessary for security, maintenance, operation or improvement of the website
These providers may process personal data or technical data, such as name, email, IP address, browser, device, date and time of access, messages sent, comment data, transaction data or other information necessary to provide the corresponding service.
CARTO, Esri, OpenStreetMap and Unsplash may receive technical browser data and the information necessary to return the requested map tile, satellite image or fallback image. Map tile requests may also indicate the geographical area and zoom level being viewed. Nominatim may receive an address or place name entered by the user, while routing.openstreetmap.de may receive the origin and destination coordinates necessary to calculate the requested route, including browser location coordinates when selected by the user as the starting point.
When the user chooses to open external services such as PayPal or Google Maps, the user may also be subject to the terms, privacy policies and cookie rules of those services.
3.15. Donations via PayPal
The website may provide external links for donations through PayPal.
Payment processing takes place in the PayPal environment. Jew Where does not directly collect full card or payment details through the Jew Where website.
PayPal may process personal data according to its own privacy policies and terms of use.
Jew Where may receive limited information about the transaction, such as name, email, amount, date, transaction reference or message associated with the donation, when made available by the payment provider.
3.16. International transfers
Some external services used by Jew Where may be located outside Portugal or outside the European Economic Area.
In such cases, technical data or minimum data necessary for the operation of those services may be processed in other countries.
This may happen, for example, when the website uses:
- payment services
- map tile and satellite imagery services
- address search and route calculation services
- external image services
- security and anti-robot services
- email delivery services
- international hosting or technical infrastructure
Where applicable, such transfers must take place in accordance with the legal safeguards provided in the GDPR, including adequacy decisions, standard contractual clauses or other legally recognized mechanisms.
3.17. Data retention
Personal data is retained only for the period necessary to fulfil the purposes described in this policy, unless the law requires or permits a longer period.

The account area may allow the user to:

The export may include profile data, privacy preferences, favorites, visited places, wishlist, diary, ratings, routes and references to comments.
Account deletion may remove data associated with the user or anonymize certain records when necessary to preserve the technical, historical or functional integrity of the website.
Some data may not be restored after account deletion.
3.19. User rights
Under applicable law, the user may have the right to:
- access their personal data
- rectify inaccurate data
- erase data
- restrict processing
- object to certain processing
- data portability
- withdraw consent, where applicable
- lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority

Before responding to a request, Jew Where may request additional information to confirm the identity of the requester.
Jew Where will respond to requests relating to the exercise of these rights within one month from receipt of the request. This period may be extended by two further months where necessary, taking into account the complexity and number of requests, with the user being informed of the extension and the reasons for the delay within the initial one-month period.
3.20. Withdrawal of consent
Where processing depends on consent, the user may withdraw that consent.
This may include, for example:
- disabling the public profile
- removing the profile photo
- changing visibility preferences
- refusing browser location
- changing preferences for non-essential cookies, where applicable
Withdrawal of consent does not affect processing validly carried out before the withdrawal.
Withdrawal of consent also does not prevent processing based on another legal basis, such as security, compliance with a legal obligation or the exercise of rights.
3.21. Objection to processing based on legitimate interest
Where processing is based on legitimate interest, the user may object, under the legally applicable terms.
The request will be assessed taking into account the user’s interests, the rights involved and Jew Where’s legitimate reasons, such as security, abuse prevention, moderation, platform protection and technical operation.
3.22. Automated decisions and profiling
Jew Where does not use exclusively automated decisions that produce legal effects concerning the user or similarly significantly affect the user.
The website may use technical tools for security, spam prevention, anti-robot protection and platform operation, but these tools are not intended to make automated legal decisions about the user.
3.23. Security
Jew Where adopts technical and organizational measures intended to protect personal data against unauthorized access, loss, alteration, improper disclosure or destruction.
These measures may include:
- user authentication
- email confirmation
- form validation
- anti-robot protection
- limitation of abusive attempts
- account permissions
- WordPress security mechanisms
- restriction of administrative access
- backups and technical maintenance measures, where applicable
No system is completely free from risks, but Jew Where seeks to maintain measures proportionate to the nature of the website and the data processed.
3.24. Privacy and protection of minors
Jew Where is an educational and informational space accessible to all. In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR, and applicable national law, Law No. 58/2019, account creation and the registration of personal data on the platform are restricted to users aged 13 or over.
Minors between 13 and 17 years old must register and use their account under the supervision and with the prior knowledge of their parents or legal guardians. The registration of accounts and the collection of data from minors under 13 are strictly prohibited.
Submission of content: Users aged 13 or over may submit text contributions, such as suggestions, corrections or comments, under the terms provided in the Terms of Use. The submission to the Jew Where team of editorial materials intended to suggest, create or document PINs, including historical photographs, documents, images or other files, is restricted to users aged 18 or over. Such editorial files may be sent only after the sender selects the material option in the contact form, confirms that they are aged 18 or over and accepts the Contribution Terms, by replying to the confirmation email from the same email address used in the form. By sending such editorial material to Jew Where, the sender declares that they are aged 18 or over and have the necessary rights or authorization to submit it.
Donations and financial transactions: Making donations or any financial transaction on Jew Where is restricted to individuals with full legal capacity and aged 18 or over. Minors are not authorized to make payments, and any donation must be made directly in the name of, and by, the respective legal guardian.

Payment processing takes place in the system of the external provider, subject to its own terms, conditions, privacy policies, security rules and possible fees.
Jew Where does not directly collect, through its website, full bank card details, PayPal account details or other sensitive financial data.
8.4. Personal data associated with the donation
When making a donation through an external service, the payment provider may process personal data of the donor necessary to process the transaction.
Jew Where may receive or consult, through its account with the payment provider, limited data associated with the transaction, such as:
- donor’s name
- email associated with the transaction
- amount donated
- date of the donation
- transaction reference
- message associated with the donation, if sent
This data may be used for confirmation, internal management, accounting, response to the donor and compliance with legal obligations, where applicable.
8.5. Payment fees and costs
The external payment service may apply processing fees or costs.
The net amount received by Jew Where may be lower than the amount sent by the donor, depending on the fees applied by the payment provider, currency used, currency conversion or other external charges.
8.6. Refund of donations
Donations are voluntary contributions to support Jew Where and do not correspond to the purchase of a product, ticket, tour, booking, membership or paid service.
For this reason, donations are generally non-refundable.
However, Jew Where may review refund requests in exceptional situations, such as:
- duplicate payment
- clear error in the amount
- unauthorized transaction
- proven technical problem
- another justified reason, when submitted within a period compatible with the rules of the payment provider

Approval of the refund will depend on review of the case, the rules of the payment provider, applicable deadlines, possible fees and applicable law.
If the donor opens a dispute, chargeback or complaint with the payment provider, the review may also follow the rules and procedures of that provider, and Jew Where may provide information necessary to clarify the transaction.
8.7. Receipts and confirmations
The donor may receive confirmation of the transaction through the external payment service.
The issuing of a receipt, declaration or tax document by Jew Where will depend on the legal nature of the responsible entity, applicable tax rules and the information provided by the donor.

8.8. Tax deductibility
Donations made to Jew Where are not presented as tax deductible.
Jew Where is not currently presented as a philanthropic entity, public utility institution or entity benefiting from a patronage tax regime that would allow the donor to assume a tax benefit for the donation.
For this reason, Jew Where does not declare, guarantee or issue confirmations for the purpose of tax deduction of donations.
The donor should not assume any tax benefit associated with the donation, unless expressly, in writing and currently confirmed by the responsible entity and applicable law.
8.9. Donations by minors
Minors may not make donations, even with authorization from parents or legal guardians, under the terms of the Privacy Policy. Any donation related to the activity of a minor must be made directly by the respective legal guardian, in their own name.
If a donation made improperly by a minor is identified, the legal guardian may contact Jew Where for review of the case.
8.10. Absence of editorial influence
Donations do not give the donor the right to control, change or condition Jew Where’s editorial content.
The Jew Where team maintains independence over:
- selection of places
- historical texts
- routes
- categories
- images
- corrections
- editorial priorities
- publication decisions
8.11. Conditional donations
Unless previously agreed in writing, Jew Where does not accept donations conditioned on a specific purpose, editorial change, publication of content, removal of content or personal benefit to the donor.
When a donation is proposed with a specific condition, the team may accept, refuse or request clarification before considering it valid.
8.12. Changes to this policy
Jew Where may update this Donation Policy to reflect legal, tax, technical or operational changes, or changes related to the payment services used.
The updated version will be published on this page with indication of the date of the last update.
